If You Live In Downtown Seattle, You Support A Tunnel To Replace The Alaskan Way Viaduct, But If You Live Elsewhere In The City ...

City of Seattle residents are split over a plan to build a deep-bore tunnel, says a new SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for KING5 News. Those who live Downtown favor the tunnel 5:1. Those who live West or South oppose. Men support. Women oppose. SurveyUSA has asked the identical question 3 times in the past year. Support for the tunnel is stable over time. Interactive tracking graphs, a SurveyUSA exclusive, are available here.

By 2:1, Seattle residents support Mayor Mike McGinn's decision to delay start of construction until the city has assurance that the state of Washington will pay for any construction cost overruns. By almost 2:1, Seattle residents think the fate of a viaduct should be decided by voters in a public referendum, and not decided by elected officials.

Those who live West and South are 5 times more likely to worry about the safety of a new tunnel than those who live downtown. 500 city residents were interviewed 07/16/10 through 07/18/10.

Currently, there is a plan to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct with a deep-bore tunnel. Do you support? Or oppose? That plan?

3If construction of the tunnel costs more than the state budgets, who should pay the extra costs? All Washington taxpayers? Or Seattle-area property owners who benefit from the tunnel?
