Common Ground to Become Even Less Common? Few Democrats, Fewer Republicans Say They Want to See Their Parties Become More Moderate:

SurveyUSA's latest national release asked 859 Republicans and 885 Democrats which direction they wanted their parties to move in.

Among Republicans...
  • 40% want the party to become more conservative, including 67% of very conservative Republicans, 48% of MAGA Republicans, and 46% of Republicans in the South.
  • 44% say they'd rather see the party stay the same, including 56% of somewhat conservative Republicans, 55% of Latino Republicans, 53% of moderate Republicans, 53% of Republicans in the Western states, and 50% of those in the Northeast.
  • Just 12% say they'd prefer the party become more moderate, including 31% of moderate Republicans and 20% of non-MAGA Republicans.
Among Democrats...
  • 50% say they want the party to become more progressive, including 69% of very liberal Democrats, 62% of progressive Democrats, and 56% of Democrats living in urban areas.
  • 24% want the party to stay the same, including 29% of Democrats with the lowest household incomes.
  • 18% say they want the party to become more moderate, including 36% of both Asian Democrats and non-progressive Democrats.

About the Poll / Filtering: SurveyUSA interviewed 3,000 US adults age 18+ online 04/02/25 through 04/06/25, using non-probability sample provided by Lucid Holdings LLC of New Orleans. Of the adults, 2,491 were identified by SurveyUSA as being registered to vote; of them, 859 identified themselves as Republicans, 885 as Democrats, and were asked the substantive questions which follow. The pool of adult survey respondents was weighted to US Census American Community Survey targets for gender, age, race, education, region and home ownership.
