Washington State's Record-Setting Streak of Democratic Governors Set to Continue With Dem Bob Ferguson 16 Points Atop GOP's Dave Reichert:

Washington State voters last elected a Republican governor in 1981, and SurveyUSA's newest polling for The Seattle Times, KING 5 TV, and the University of Washington's Center for an Informed Public indicates the state's Democratic governor streak, the longest in the nation, is set to be extended next month when votes are counted.

Democratic incumbent Attorney General Bob Ferguson takes 50% of the vote today, former Republican Congressman Dave Reichert 34%. 16% of likely voters are undecided, a sign voters aren't particularly focused on this contest, likely a reflection of it being seen as a safely blue governorship.

Reichert, who served two terms as King County Sheriff before running for Congress in 2005, runs strongly among conservatives and Republicans, as well as among voters who say border security, the cost of living, or crime are the most important issues in this election. He also leads among those who are likely but not certain to vote, and is nominally ahead among those with high school educations. Ferguson, a King County Council Member before his election as Attorney General in 2012, has the lead elsewhere. Voters over age 50 back Ferguson by 24 percentage points; those under 50 prefer Ferguson by a smaller 6-point margin.

Voters say they have more trust in Ferguson to improve each of the following issues:
  • 30 Points: Reproductive rights. 53% have more trust in Ferguson on this issue, including 64% of seniors, typically the most reliable voters. 23% say they trust Reichert more.
  • 22 Points. Education. 51% say they trust Ferguson more to improve education; 29% say they trust Reichert more on this issue.
  • 21 Points: Affordable Housing. 49% have more trust in Ferguson, 28% in Reichert.
  • 16 Points: The economy. 48% have more trust in Ferguson, 32% in Reichert.
  • 14 Points: Public Safety. 48% say they trust Ferguson more on public safety, 34% Reichert – the former Sheriff's strongest showing.
Incumbent Governor Jay Inslee, first elected in 2012, is not seeking a fourth term.

About the Poll / Filtering: SurveyUSA interviewed 1,000 Washington State adults 10/09/2024 through 10/14/2024. Of the adults, 860 were registered to vote; of the registered voters, 703 were identified as being likely to vote in the November 5 general election and were asked the substantive questions which follow. This research was conducted online among a representative nonprobability sample of Washington adults, selected at random by Lucid Holdings LLC of New Orleans. Adult respondents were weighted to US Census American Community Survey targets for gender, age, race, education, and home ownership, and to 2020 recalled Presidential vote.
