Biden Retains Senate Seat by 2:1 Margin: In an election for United States Senator from Delaware today, 09/24/08, Democrat Joe Biden defeats Republican Christine O'Donnell 64% to 32%, according to this latest SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for WCAU-TV Philadelphia.

Biden today wins majorities among all demographic groups. 33% of Republicans cross over to vote for Biden; Biden wins independents by 22 points. O'Donnell, a political commentator, wins 2 of 3 Republican votes, 3 of 4 conservative votes, 54% of pro-life votes, and 51% of gun owners; Biden wins majorities in all other groups.

Biden, first elected to the Senate in 1972, is the Democratic nominee for Vice President. Should Biden win both elections and resign his Senate seat, a replacement Senator would be named by Delaware's governor and would serve until the 2010 general election, when a new election would be held to fill the remaining four years of Biden's term. Delaware's governor today is Democrat Ruth Ann Minner, who is term-limited and not running for re-election. Democrat Jack Markell, currently state treasurer, holds a 2:1 lead in the race for governor, according to SurveyUSA polling.
