In Maine, Mills Doubles Nearest Gubernatorial Challenger in 1st-Choice Balloting Among Democrats; Moody 15 Points Ahead of Mayhew
On 1st Ballot Among Republicans; In 2nd Congressional District, St Clair and Golden In Tight Fight to Oppose GOP Incumbent Poliquin:

Maine Attorney General Janet Mills is by 2:1 ahead of her nearest Democratic challenger, Mark Eves, on the first ballot in the primary election for Governor, according to SurveyUSA research conducted for the Bangor Daily News. But: Maine for the first time in this primary will allow voters to rank their choices from 1st to last, so the 1st ballot is just part of the story.

In the Republican primary for Governor, businessman Shawn Moody leads Mary Mayhew 34% to 19% on the first ballot. The winner of the Republican primary will face the winner of the Democratic primary. Incumbent Governor Paul LePage is term-limited.

In the Democratic primary in Maine's 2nd Congressional District for the U.S. House of Representatives, conservationist Lucas St Clair has a narrow advantage over Jared Golden on the first ballot. These findings are difficult to interpret because candidate Jonathan Fulford, named in the survey, dropped out of the race while interviews were being conducted. It is unclear if Fulford's support will go to St Clair, Golden, or Craig Olson. The winner of the Democratic primary will face Republican incumbent Bruce Poliquin.

President Donald Trump has a Minus 19 Net Favorability Rating in the state of Maine: 31% of Mainers say they have a favorable opinion of the President, 50% say they have an unfavorable opinion of the President.

SurveyUSA interviewed 2,192 state of Maine adults 04/26/18 through 05/01/18. Democrats in Maine's 2nd Congressional District were, by design, over-sampled by 100%, to permit conclusions to be drawn about the U.S. House Democratic primary. Individuals over-sampled were then down-weighted when the statewide data you see here was aggregated, so that their influence is proportional to their percentage of the population.
