Oklahoma Corporation Commission -- Republicans Cloud, Murphy Remain On Top: Republican candidates are well positioned to win both Oklahoma Corporation Commission seats in a vote today, 10/20/08, according to this exclusive KFOR-TV poll conducted by SurveyUSA. In an election for a full-term seat on the Commission, Incumbent Republican Jeff Cloud defeats Democrat Charles Gray 53% to 37%. Compared to an identical SurveyUSA poll released 3 weeks ago, Cloud is up 6 points; Gray is down 7 points, returning the race almost exactly to where it in September, when Cloud led by 15 points.
Cloud today leads among both men and women, among voters of all age groups, and in both Western and Eastern Oklahoma. Cloud takes 87% of Republican votes, 25% of Democratic votes. Independents split. Cloud was first elected to the Commission in 2002. In the race for a short-term, 2-year term on the Commission, Republican Dana Murphy defeats Democratic incumbent Jim Roth 50% to 43%. Compared to 3 weeks ago, Roth is up 2 points; Murphy is flat. Compared to September, Roth is up 7; Murphy is down 4. The contest continues to tighten. Murphy, a geologist and attorney, leads by 10 points among men and by 3 among women. Among voters age 18 to 49, Murphy leads by 8 points; among voters age 50+, Murphy leads by 5. Murphy holds 81% of GOP base. Roth holds 66% of Democrat base. Independents break 3:2 for Roth. Roth was appointed by Democratic Governor Brad Henry to fill a vacancy on the Commission in June of 2007; Republican Denise Bode, elected to her second full term in the office in 2004, resigned her seat. The winner of the short-term commission seat will serve the remaining two years of Bode's term. |
Filtering: SurveyUSA interviewed 800 Oklahoma adults 10/18/08 and 10/19/08. Of the adults, 709 were registered to vote. Of the registered voters, 561 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in or before the 11/04/08 general election. |
