In Washington State, Momentum for the Democrat in US Senate Contest; Murray and Rossi Now Even: In an election for United States Senator from the state of Washington today, 09/22/10, incumbent Democrat Patty Murray and Republican challenger Dino Rossi finish effectively even, according to a new SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for KING-5 TV News in Seattle.

Today, it's Murray 50%, Rossi 48%, a result within the survey's theoretical margin of sampling error. Compared to an identical SurveyUSA poll one month ago, Murray is up 5 points; Rossi is down 4, a 9-point momentum swing to the Democrat. Murray has cut into Rossi's leads among men, voters under age 50, and independents, and has increased existing leads among women and older voters. In Metro Seattle, which includes Snohomish, Pierce and King counties, the 2 candidates were tied 1 month ago; today, Murray leads by 7 points. In the rest of Western Washington, Rossi had led, now doesn't. In Eastern Washington, Rossi had led big, now leads small.

Murray, first elected to the US Senate in 1992, is seeking a 4th term. Rossi has run for statewide office twice before, losing to Christine Gregoire by a handful of votes in 2004 and by 6 percentage points in 2008.

 
Filtering: SurveyUSA interviewed 1,000 Washington State adults 09/19/10 through 09/21/10. Of them, 859 were registered to vote. Of the registered voters, 609 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely voters in the November general election. 38 of Washington's 39 counties vote solely by mail; ballots will be mailed to voters in 3 weeks, on 10/15/10.
