MN DFL Gov Walz Favorability Rating Dips – But His Leads Against GOP Challengers Widen: Is Leaked SCOTUS Decision Impacting This Contest?

SurveyUSA's latest tracking poll, conducted exclusively for KSTP-TV in Minneapolis, KAAL-TV in Rochester-Mason City-Austin, and WDIO-TV in Duluth, shows Minnesota's incumbent DFL Governor Tim Walz increasing his leads in his November re-election bid, even while facing a simultaneous decline in his net favorability. Meanwhile, the percentage of likely voters who say abortion is the issue that will most influence their vote this year quadruples, from 3% in February to 12% today – and those voters overwhelmingly break DFL.

Breaking down all the numbers and comparing them to those in SurveyUSA's previous poll, released three months ago:
  • Walz today leads former State Senator Scott Jensen, his nearest opponent, by a 5-point margin, up from 3 points three months ago, 44% to 39%. Overall, Walz is up 1 point and Jensen is down 1 point. Among men, Jensen leads by 9, up from a 2-point lead three months ago; among women, Walz leads by 20, up from a 10-point lead. The gender gap between the two candidates is 29 points, up from 12 points three months ago. Among the 32% of likely voters who say abortion should always be legally permitted, Walz leads by 57 points; among the 26% who say abortion should be legally permitted with some restrictions, Walz leads by 12. 1 in 4 voters say abortion should only be legal in cases of rape, incest, or to save a mother's life; Jensen leads by 35 points among that group; among the 11% of Minnesota likely voters who say abortion should always be illegal, Jensen leads by 39. These numbers are broadly similar across each matchup. Geographically, Walz has gained ground across the state: in the greater Twin Cities area, Walz had led by 15 points, now leads by 17; in Southern Minnesota, Walz had led by 4, now leads by 11. In Western Minnesota, Jensen had led by 26, now leads by 22; in the northeastern part of the state, Jensen had led by 12, now leads by 9.
  • Walz has also gained 2 points against State Senator Paul Gazelka. Walz had led by 5, now leads by 7, 43% to 36%. Again a significant gender gap: Women back Walz by 19 points, men back Gazelka by 6, a 25-point gap, and an increase from 10 points in February. Gazelka leads by 24 points among the 14% of voters who say crime is the most important issue, significantly better than his fellow Republicans.
  • Walz leads former Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek by 10 points, 47% to 37%. Stanek, who had not yet entered the race when SurveyUSA last polled, runs strongly among voters age 50 to 64, where he takes 50%, more than any other Republican.
  • Mike Murphy, the mayor of Lexington, also trails Walz by 10 points, taking 35% to Walz's 45%, as does physician Neil Shah, who sees 34% versus 44% for Walz. Shah, notably, is the one candidate who has narrowed the difference between himself and the incumbent, albeit by a single point; last month, Shah trailed by 11.
  • Business executive Kendall Qualls has given up the most ground since the previous poll; in February, Qualls trailed Walz by 8 points; today, Qualls trails by 12, with Walz taking 46% in a vote today, Qualls 34%.
Net Favorability is calculated by subtracting unfavorable ratings from favorable ratings. While Tim Walz's net favorability rating has declined 5 points, from Plus 8 in February to Plus 3 today, Walz remains the best-known candidate with the highest net favorability – and today, for the first time since SurveyUSA began tracking candidate favorability, Walz is the only candidate with a positive Net Favorability. Candidate names were shown to respondents in random order, ranked here from highest to lowest net favorability:
  • Plus 3 Tim Walz. 44% have a favorable opinion, 41% an unfavorable opinion; 11% are neutral; 3% have no opinion.
  • Minus 1 Scott Jensen. 17% favorable, 18% unfavorable; 26% neutral, 39% no opinion. Down 7 points from 3 months ago, when Jensen was at Plus 6.
  • Minus 1 Kendall Qualls. 12% favorable, 13% unfavorable; 29% neutral, 46% no opinion. Qualls is the only candidate whose net favorability has improved since the previous poll, when he was at Minus 4.
  • Minus 5 Rich Stanek. 11% favorable, 16% unfavorable; 32% neutral, 41% no opinion. This is Stanek's first appearance in the poll.
  • Minus 7 Paul Gazelka. 14% favorable, 21% unfavorable; 25% neutral, 41% no opinion. Unchanged from February.
  • Minus 7 Mike Murphy. 8% favorable, 15% unfavorable; 27% neutral, 50% with no opinion. Down 3 points from February.
  • Minus 10 Neil Shah. 6% favorable, 16% unfavorable; 26% neutral, 52% no opinion. Down 3 points from the previous poll.

2Minnesota will hold an election for Governor next November. Not everyone makes the time to vote in every election. Which best describes you? Are you certain to vote? Will you probably vote? Are the chances you will vote about 50/50? Or will you probably not vote?
