Hours before polls close in New York, SurveyUSA's latest research for WNYT-TV in Albany delves into voters' attitudes on a host of elected officials and issues.

President Joe Biden today has a Net Job Approval of Minus 3 among registered voters across the entire state of New York, up slightly from Minus 6 two weeks ago, but significantly lower than the Plus 9 he notched in August. Net Approval ratings are calculated by subtracting an elected official's disapproval rating from their approval rating. Today, 47% approve of the job Biden is doing as President (22% strongly approve, 25% somewhat approve) and 50% disapprove (16% somewhat disapprove, 34% strongly disapprove.) SurveyUSA's exclusive interactive tracking graph tells the tale.

Biden today would defeat former President Donald Trump among registered voters in a 2024 rematch, 46% to 34%, with 8% interested in voting for a candidate from another party, and 12% undecided – a high enough number that suggests voters may be hoping for a different set of candidates in that 2024 contest.

Switching now to those who are likely voters in today's midterm election, voters give positive Net Approval ratings to New York's Governor Kathy Hochul (Plus 5), both US Senators (Plus 13 for Chuck Schumer, Plus 19 for Kirsten Gillibrand), and their own US representative (Plus 20). 42% of likely voters say they are unfamiliar with Republican Elise Stefanik, US Representative for New York's 21st Congressional District and chair of the House Republican Conference; 17% have a favorable opinion (8% very favorable, 9% somewhat favorable), 20% a neutral opinion, and 22% an unfavorable opinion (7% somewhat unfavorable, 15% very unfavorable), giving her a Net Favorability of Minus 5.

53% of likely voters say they are more likely to support the Democratic party right now; 39% say the Republican party. 4% say they're more likely to support a third party, including 11% of independents; another 4% (and another 11% of independents) are undecided.

37% of likely voters say inflation is the issue that will be most important in deciding how they will vote; 18% say abortion; 12% say crime; 4 other issues are all in single digits. Among those voters who tell SurveyUSA they are voting for Republican Lee Zeldin in today's election, 56% say inflation is their top issue, 16% say crime; other issues are in single digits, including abortion, at 3%. Among those who say they are voting for Kathy Hochul, 30% say abortion is the most important issue to their vote; 21% say inflation; 12% say healthcare; 10% say guns. Other issues are in single digits, including crime, at 8%.

When it comes to crime, 43% say the Republican party is more effective at reducing crime; 40% say the Democratic party, a 3-point edge for the Republicans. 61% say they feel less safe today than they did a year ago; 6% say they feel more safe; 32% say they feel no different. 85% of Zeldin voters feel less safe, twice as many as Hochul voters, 43% of whom feel less safe, and 48% of whom say they feel no different.

Cashless bail is seen as being less fair than the previous cash bail system by 35% of likely voters, seen as more fair by 22%; it is seen as no more or less fair by 19%, and 24% are not sure. Meanwhile, 57% say cashless bail has led to an increase in crime, including 85% of Zeldin voters and 34% of Hochul voters; 5% say it has led to a decrease in crime; 21% say it is having no impact either way, including 32% of Hochul voters and 6% of Zeldin voters.

On the economy, 46% say the Republican Party is more effective at improving the economy; 43% say the Democratic Party – another 3-point edge for the Republicans. 47% say they are pessimistic about the economic outlook for their family over the next year, including 66% of Zeldin voters and 32% of Hochul voters; 39% are optimistic, including 53% of Hochul voters and 22% of Zeldin voters.

Majorities of likely voters support gun control measures, with majorities saying they strongly support them. Percentages saying they strongly support each of the following, ranked from highest to lowest:
  • 78%: Requiring a background check for all gun purchases, including those made at gun shows and online
  • 70%: Raising the minimum age to purchase assault weapons from 18 to 21
  • 70%: Allowing family members or law enforcement to ask a judge to temporarily suspend a person's access to guns if they have evidence that the person poses a significant threat to themselves or others
  • 56%: A limit on the number of rounds of ammunition a weapon can hold

  • 52%: A ban on high-capacity magazines
32% say the state's concealed carry laws are too loose; 26% say they are too restrictive; another 26% say they are just about right.

On a scale of 1-10, where 10 means it's the single most important thing and 1 means it isn't important at all, the average New York likely voter rates the impact the Supreme Court's reversal of Roe v. Wade will have on their votes as a 6.8. Among Hochul voters, it's 8.1; among Zeldin voters, a 5.1.
