5 Weeks Until Votes Counted in NC US Senate Contest, Republican Budd and Democrat Beasley Running Neck-and-Neck to Replace Richard Burr:

Republican Ted Budd and Democrat Cheri Beasley are effectively tied in their contest to replace retiring US Senator Richard Burr, according to SurveyUSA's latest exclusive polling for WRAL-TV in Raleigh.

Today it's Budd 43%, Beasley 42%, with 2% of likely voters planning to vote for Libertarian Shannon Bray and less than 1% voting for Green Party candidate Matthew Hoh. 13% of likely voters say they are undecided.

Budd leads by 6 points among men, Beasley by 4 points among women – a 10 point gender gap. White voters back Budd by an 18-point margin; Black voters back Beasley by 65 points. Budd leads by 16 points in greater Charlotte, Beasley by 15 in greater Raleigh; Beasley has a small 4-point edge in the Greensboro area, and leads by a nominal 2 points in southern and coastal North Carolina.

Looking at the issues, a significant plurality of voters, 44%, say the economy is the issue that will be most important in determining their vote; those voters support Ted Budd by nearly 2:1, 57% to 30%. 17% of voters say abortion is the most important issue; these voters support Cheri Beasley by a 49-point margin, 69% to 20%. 9% of likely voters say heath care is their most important issue; they back Beasley by 67 points. 8% are most focused on immigration; they prefer Budd by 62 points.

Taking a deeper dive specifically into the issue of abortion, those who say it will be the determining factor in their vote, 14% of the electorate, strongly back Beasley, 64% to 23%. Those who say it will be a major factor, 34% of voters, prefer Beasley by 27 points, 56% to 29%. Those who say abortion will be somewhat of an factor, 26% of likely voters, prefer Budd by 19 points; 23% say abortion will not be a factor in their vote at all back Budd by 49 points.

43% of likely voters say Donald Trump's endorsement of Ted Budd makes them less likely to vote for Budd; 30% say it makes them more likely to vote for him. 27% say it does not impact their vote either way. 46% say that Budd's House vote to overturn the 2020 election results makes them less likely to vote for Budd; 25% say that makes them more likely to vote for him. 29% say it does not impact their vote.

About the Poll / Filtering: SurveyUSA interviewed 1,100 North Carolina adults 09/28/2022 through 10/02/2022. Of the adults, 918 are registered to vote in North Carolina. Of the registered voters, SurveyUSA identified 677 as being likely to cast a ballot in the November election for United States Senate. This research was conducted online among a representative cross section of North Carolina adults, selected at random by Lucid Holdings LLC of New Orleans. Adult respondents were weighted to US Census targets for gender, age, race, education, and home-ownership.
