In Primary to Fill US House Seat Vacated by Susan Davis in CA-53, Fellow Democrat Jacobs and GOP Challenger Stoddard Best Positioned To Advance to November Run-Off; Voters Say 'Holding POTUS Accountable' Is Most Important Issue in How They Vote on Super Tuesday: 2 Weeks to the California Super Tuesday Primary, voters in the CA-53 US Congressional District are set to determine which 2 candidates advance to the 11/03/20 general election in the fight to fill the seat vacated by Susan Davis, who is retiring after 20 years representing the district. At this hour, in research conducted during the US Senate impeachment trial of President Donald Trump, for KGTV-TV in San Diego and the Union Tribune, the contest stands: * Democrat Sara Jacobs, 23%. * Republican Chris Stoddard, 10%. * 10 candidates (including 7 Democrats, 2 Republicans and 1 independent), trail with 5%, 4%, 3%, or 2% of the vote. * 35% of likely voters tell SurveyUSA they remain undecided. Asked which of 10 issues were most important in deciding which candidate to vote for, CA-53 likely primary voters named "holding the President accountable" most often. Of those focused on keeping President Trump in check, Jacobs leads the nearest Democrat, Jose Caballero, 6:1, and leads Stoddard, the nearest Republican, 46:1. Among voters who say the most important issue is the "cost of living" in the district, which button-hooks east from Mission Hills to El Cajon, slicing through the city of San Diego south to Otay Mesa, Jacobs leads Stoddard 2:1. Among voters who say "rallying around the President" is the most important issue, Stoddard leads fellow Republican Famela Ramos 3:1. Those included by SurveyUSA as "likely primary voters" are either "100% certain" they will return a primary ballot or "almost certain." Among just those 100% certain, Jacobs' support increases to 27%, Stoddard is stable at 10%, and Democrats Georgette Gomez and Joaquin Vazquez nominally slot in ahead of Republican Ramos. Still, even among the "100% certain" voters, 33% are undecided, 4 weeks till votes are counted. In California's Top-2 primary system, the candidates who finish 1st and 2nd in the primary advance to the November general election, even if both candidates are from the same party. About: SurveyUSA interviewed 650 adults from CA-53 01/30/20 through 02/02/20. Of the adults, 583 are registered to vote. Of the registered voters, SurveyUSA identified 513 who are likely to return a ballot on or before the 03/03/20 deadline. This research was conducted using blended sample, mixed mode. Respondents reachable on a home telephone (47% of likely primary voters) were interviewed on their home phone using the recorded voice of a professional announcer. Respondents not reachable on a home telephone (53% of likely primary voters) were shown a questionnaire on the display on their smartphone, tablet or other electronic device. Candidates for office were revealed to respondents in random order. Results are ranked below, for ease of comprehension, from highest vote-getter to lowest. There is no meaningful statistical difference among the 10 candidates who poll at 5%, 4%, 3% and 2% of the vote. |
