MN Incumbent DFL Governor Walz Loses Ground but Remains Ahead of Opponents in Re-Election Fight; Continues to Hold Plus 8 Favorability:

Nine months until votes are counted in Minnesota's election for Governor, DFL incumbent Governor Tim Walz is ahead of each of 6 potential Republican challengers, according to SurveyUSA's latest exclusive polling for KSTP-TV Minneapolis, KAAL-TV in Rochester-Mason City-Austin, and WDIO-TV in Duluth.

As was the case when SurveyUSA last polled the contest two months ago, Walz has the best name recognition and highest Net Favorability rating of the field. Net Favorability is calculated by subtracting unfavorable ratings from favorable ratings. Candidate names were shown to respondents in random order, ranked here from highest to lowest net favorability:
  • Plus 8 Tim Walz: 45% have a favorable opinion of Walz, 37% unfavorable; 14% are neutral. 4% have no opinion. Unchanged from 2 months ago.
  • Plus 6 Scott Jensen: 18% favorable, 12% unfavorable; 29% are neutral; 41% have no opinion. Jensen's Net Favorability was Plus 4 in the last poll.
  • Minus 4 Mike Murphy: 11% favorable, 15% unfavorable; 28% are neutral; 47% have no opinion. Murphy is down from Plus 2 in December.
  • Minus 4 Kendall Qualls: 9% favorable, 13% unfavorable; 24% are neutral; 54% have no opinion. Qualls was not in the previous poll.
  • Minus 6 Michelle Benson: 9% favorable, 15% unfavorable; 33% are neutral; 43% have no opinion. Down 4 points from Minus 4 two months ago.
  • Minus 7 Paul Gazelka: 12% favorable, 19% unfavorable; 28% are neutral; 41% have no opinion. Down from Plus 2 in December's polling.
  • Minus 7 Neil Shah: 8% favorable, 15% unfavorable; 27% are neutral; 50% have no opinion. Two months ago, Shah was at Minus 1.
Walz leads in head-to-head matchups against each potential Republican challenger:
  • Walz leads former State Senator Scott Jensen by 3 points today, 43% to 40%; in December, Walz led Jensen by 12 points. In the greater Twin Cities area, Walz continues to lead Jensen by 15; elsewhere in Minnesota, Jensen has surged, cutting an 18-point deficit to a 4-point deficit in the southern part of the state, widening his western MN lead from 7 points to 26 points, and going from 4 points behind to 12 points ahead in northeastern Minnesota.
  • Walz leads Paul Gazelka by 5 points today, down from 13 points two months ago. Among women, Walz had led by 26 points, now leads by 11; among voters age 50 to 64, Walz had led by 18 points, now trails by a nominal 2 points.
  • Against State Senator Michelle Benson, Walz today leads by 8 points, down from 12 points in December. Walz has lost ground among women, where he had led by 25 points, now leads by 11, but that shift is offset by gains among men, where Walz had nominally trailed by a single point, now leads by 4.
  • Walz also leads business executive Kendall Qualls by 8 points. Qualls, who entered the race in January, is the candidate who does the best among voters who say taxes will be the issue that will most influence their vote.
  • Lexington Mayor Mike Murphy today trails Walz by 9 points, slightly improved from an 11-point deficit in the previous poll.
  • Walz defeats physician Neil Shah by 11 points today, down from 17 points in December.
