Women, Older Voters, Independents Begin to Look at Challenger in Oklahoma Senate Race, but Advantage Remains Inhofe's: In an election for United States Senator from Oklahoma today, 10/20/08, Republican incumbent Jim Inhofe defeats Democratic State Senator Andrew Rice 51% to 39%, according to this latest exclusive KFOR-TV poll conducted by SurveyUSA. Independent Steven Wallace takes 7% of the vote. Compared to an identical SurveyUSA poll released twenty days ago, Inhofe is down 2 points; Rice is up 2 points. Compared to an identical SurveyUSA poll released 6 weeks ago, Inhofe is down 5 points; Rice is up 5 points.

Among men, the race has largely been static: Inhofe has led by 22, by 25, and now by 21 points. Among woman, a different story: Inhofe has led by 22, 8, and now by 3 points. Inhofe's lead among voters age 18 to 49 is essentially unchanged over the past six weeks: 14 points then, 12 points today. Among voters 50+, Inhofe's lead has fallen from 31 points to 9 points.

83% of Republicans vote for Inhofe; 63% of Democrats vote for Rice. Among independents, the race has shifted; Inhofe led by 23 points six weeks ago, by 3 points twenty days ago, and trails Rice by 12 points today.

Inhofe, who is seeking his third full term, was first elected in a 1994 special election.

 
Filtering: SurveyUSA interviewed 800 Oklahoma adults 10/18/08 and 10/19/08. Of the adults, 709 were registered to vote. Of the registered voters, 561 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in or before the 11/04/08 general election.
