By 2:1, California Says Driverless Cars, Piloted By Computers, should *Not* Be Allowed on the Streets of their Neighborhood;
57% Would Not Feel Safe Hopping into an Autonomous Car, Even If It Were Legal to Own and They Could Afford To Do So:

California is conflicted over who, if anyone, should be responsible for regulating so-called driverless cars, currently being brought to market by traditional automakers, fringe-element upstarts, and well-financed over-the-road truck manufacturers, according to SurveyUSA's latest polling for KABC-TV Los Angeles, KPIX-TV San Francisco, KGTV-TV San Diego, and KFSN-TV Fresno.

24% of Californians say the federal government should be responsible for deciding where driverless cars are allowed and where they are not allowed. 29%, a plurality, say the state of California should make those decisions. 19% say individual local governments should decide if autonomous vehicles are permitted on the streets of a particular town. Just 4% say the automakers should be responsible for self-policing. 9% say no one should have regulatory authority over this new and powerful yet potentially deadly frontier in transportation.

By 2:1, Californians say driverless cars should not be allowed on the streets "where I live," SurveyUSA finds. That grows to 4:1 among seniors and grows to 5:1 in rural parts of the state. Men are more likely to see driverless cars as no big deal; women just the opposite. Only among liberals does the number of adults in favor of turning driverless cars approach --- but not quite reach --- 1 in 3.

29% of Californians feel "very unsafe" getting into a driverless car, compared to 8% who feel "very safe." Twice as many suburban men feel "very safe" as suburban women. When answer choices are aggregated, 28% feel either "safe" or "very safe," half as many as the 57% who feel "unsafe" or "very unsafe."

About: SurveyUSA interviewed 1,100 state of California adults 03/22/18 through 03/25/18. On 03/19/18, 4 days before interviewing for this survey began, an Uber car running on auto-pilot struck and killed a pedestrian in Tempe AZ. On 03/23/18, a Tesla car in Redwood City CA was involved in a fatal collision, but the automaker did not disclose that autopilot played a role in the crash until 03/30/18, days after the interviewing for this survey had ended.

Should automobiles that are designed to be driven by computers, without a human driver, be allowed on the streets of your neighborhood?

If a driverless car were for sale in California, if it were legal to own one, and if you could afford to buy it, how safe would you feel... riding in a car that had no driver and was being controlled by a computer?
