Most Washington State Republicans Say US Democracy 'Weakening and May Collapse;' Most Democrats Say 'Holding Firm but Being Threatened';
2 of 3 Say More States Should Have Vote-by-Mail Elections Like Washington and Oregon, Including Pluralities of Trump Voters and Republicans:


Only 13% of Washington State voters say America's democracy is strong and resilient, according to SurveyUSA's latest polling conducted exclusively for The Seattle Times, KING 5 TV, the University of Washington's Center for an Informed Public, and Washington State University's Murrow College of Communication.

40% say our democracy is holding firm but being threatened, including majorities of senior citizens (57%), Democrats (53%), Biden voters (52%), and liberals (51%).

39% say US democracy is weakening and may collapse, including majorities of Republicans (56%), Conservatives (52%), and Trump voters (52%).

Meantime, 67% agree that "More states should have vote-by-mail elections like in Washington and Oregon." Just 19% disagree. Majorities of men and women, young and old, white and non-white, rich and poor, and college-educated and non-college-educated agree. Agreement outstrips disagreement among every subgroup save one, voters who describe themselves as very conservative – a majority of whom disagree.

About the Poll / Filtering: SurveyUSA interviewed 875 Washington State adults online 10/14/22 through 10/19/22, using sample provided by Lucid Holdings LLC of New Orleans. Of the adults, 719 were identified as being registered to vote and were asked the questions which follow. The pool of adult survey respondents was weighted to US Census targets for gender, age, race, education, and home ownership.
