Results of SurveyUSA Election Poll #14283

In MN3, Slight Edge to Republicans as they Attempt to Hold Ramstad's Seat: In an election for the open seat in the United States House of Representatives from Minnesota's 3rd Congressional District today, 09/01/08, two months till votes are counted, Republican Erik Paulsen edges DFL Party candidate Ashwin Madia, 44% to 41%, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for Roll Call, the newspaper of Capitol Hill. 10% of voters choose "other," which in this district would be one of the candidates from the Independence Party, whose primary is next week. The survey results are within the margin of sampling error. Paulsen leads among men. Madia leads among women. Independents split. Moderates break 3:2 Democrat. Paulsen leads among voters age 35 to 49. All other age groups split. Madia runs 7 points weaker than Barack Obama in the district. Democrat Obama is viewed favorably by 49%. DFL Madia is viewed favorably by 29%. Republican McCain is viewed favorably by 46%. Republican Paulsen is viewed favorably by 30%. Retiring 9-term Republican congressman Jim Ramstad is viewed favorably by 56%. In MN3, 16% approve of the job that the US Congress is doing. 35% approve of the job that President George W. Bush is doing.

Filtering / Context: Minnesota's 3rd Congressional District forms a crescent around the western Minneapolis suburbs and is one of the most affluent in the state. Incumbent republican Jim Ramstad is not seeking a 10th term. George W. Bush received 51% in the district in 2004. 700 registered voters were interviewed 08/26/08 through 08/28/08 using Registration Based Sample from Aristotle of Washington DC. Of the registered voters, 636 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in November. Given the potential for a comparatively large 3rd-Party vote, and given that an additional 6 percent of voters are undecided, any outcome is possible on election day.
