Former Atlanta Mayor Reed, Incumbent Council President Moore Are Early Favorites To Advance to Runoff Election To Succeed Bottoms as Mayor:

14 weeks until votes are counted in the election to replace Keisha Lance Bottoms as Mayor of Atlanta, Bottoms' predecessor in office, Kasim Reed, has the early lead, according to this latest exclusive 11Alive News Poll conducted by SurveyUSA.

Today, Reed takes 17% of the vote; City Council President Felicia Moore takes 10%. Eight other candidates are in single digits, with 39% of likely voters — including 35% of those who say they are certain they will vote in the election — undecided.

Reed has a clear advantage among voters with high school educations, where he leads Moore by 15 points; he leads by 8 among those who have attended some college, and by a nominal 3 points among those with 4-year degrees. Reed leads Moore by 13 points among conservatives; among moderates and liberals, Reed and Moore are tied. Among Black voters, Reed leads by 13; among white voters, Moore leads by a nominal 3 points. Moore also leads by 3 among voters age 50 to 64; Reed leads by 6 among those 18 to 34, by 12 among 35 to 49 year-olds, and by 7 among those age 65+. Reed leads by 6 in urban parts of Atlanta, and leads Moore by a nominal 2 points in suburban areas, where Walter Reeves, at 6% overall, takes 10% of the vote.

Among those who say they are certain to vote in the election, Reed leads Moore by 4 points, 16% to 12%. Among those who will probably vote, Reed leads by 11, 19% to 8%, with Moore nominally behind Walter Reeves and Antonio Brown, who each take 10% of those probable voters. Among those who say there is a 50/50 chance they will vote, Reed leads Moore by 7 points, 15% to 8%.

64% of likely voters say a candidate being under investigation for alleged campaign finance violations would be a major factor in their vote; among those voters, Reed edges Moore by a nominal 3 points. Among the 30% of voters who say such an investigation is a minor factor or not a factor at all, Reed leads by 14.

77% of likely voters say the amount of crime in Atlanta will be a major factor in their vote; 22% say it is less of a factor. Reed leads by 6 among those who say crime is a major factor, by 9 among those who say otherwise. Among the 19% of Atlanta likely voters who say they or someone in their household have been the victim of a violent crime over the past 2 years, Reed and Moore are effectively tied; among those who have not been the victim of a violent crime, Reed leads by 7.

In the election for City Council President, the majority of voters today, 55%, are undecided. 14% today would vote for Mike Russell, 12% for Courtney English, 10% for Natalyn Archibong, 8% for Doug Shipman: any outcome is possible in this contest.

About the Poll / Filtering: SurveyUSA interviewed 650 adults from the city of Atlanta 07/20/21 through 07/25/21. Of the adults, 527 were identified as being registered to vote; of the registered voters, 516 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in the November election for Mayor, including 371 determined to be certain to vote, 88 determined to be probable voters, and another 58 determined to have a 50/50 chance of voting. This research was conducted using blended sample, mixed mode. Respondents reachable on a home telephone (26% of likely voters) were interviewed on their home telephone in the recorded voice of a professional announcer, using telephone sample of registered voters purchased from Aristotle in Washington DC. Respondents unreachable on a landline telephone (74% of likely voters) were shown the survey questions on the display of their smartphone, laptop or tablet, using online adult panelists chosen randomly by Lucid Holdings LLC of New Orleans. The combined pool of survey respondents was weighted to US Census targets for gender, age, race, and home ownership.
