NY-19 Rematch: Democrat Riley Leads Freshman Republican Molinaro by 4 Point Margin, While Harris and Trump Battle For Every Vote:

Republican Marc Molinaro defeated Democrat Josh Riley by 1.6 percentage points in 2022, but SurveyUSA's latest exclusive polling for WNYT Newschannel 13 in Albany shows a potential reversal in the two candidates' 2024 rematch, and a tighter race for President than 4 years ago, when Joe Biden won the current district borders by 4½ percentage points.

Today, Riley takes 46% of the vote, Molinaro 42%, with 12% of likely voters telling SurveyUSA they have yet to make up their minds. In the Presidential contest, Harris is at 48%, Trump 47%, with 2% saying they'll vote for another candidate and 4% undecided.

Riley, at 46%, is running 2 points behind Harris; Molinaro, at 42%, is running 5 points behind Trump. Riley leads by 12 points among women; Molinaro leads by 2 points among men – a 14-point gender gap, narrower than the 17-point gap at the top of the ticket. Riley leads by 22 points among voters age 35 to 49, by 9 points among those 50 to 64, and by a nominal single point among voters 65+. Molinaro holds a 13-point lead among 18 to 34-year-olds, also the one age break where Trump is leading Harris – a perhaps counter-intuitive finding SurveyUSA has noted in numerous surveys this cycle, and one which may be related to both the influence of Republican-leaning influencers on young men and on the particular difficulty of reaching younger respondents. Riley is well ahead among voters who cite abortion, health care, or gun control as the most important issue in their decision this year; Molinaro is well ahead among those who say immigration, taxes, or jobs and the economy are most important. Voters who describe the issue of migrants seeking sanctuary at the southern border as a crisis prefer Molinaro by a 60-point margin; those who say it is a problem but not a crisis prefer Riley by 59 points; those who say it isn't a problem at all back Riley by an 84-point margin. Voters who have not attended college prefer Molinaro by 11 points; those who have attended some college give Molinaro a 5-point edge; college graduates break for Riley by nearly 2:1.

Helping Riley is his higher net favorability rating, calculated by subtracting a candidate's unfavorable rating from his favorable rating. 37% say they have a favorable opinion of Riley, 31% an unfavorable one, making his net favorability a +6; for Molinaro, 32% have a favorable view, 40% an unfavorable one: a net favorability of -8.

The political ads in the race may also be having more of a negative impact on the incumbent: when the 83% who recall seeing campaign ads are asked what impact they've had on how they view each candidate, 41% say the ads have made them feel less favorably toward Molinaro, 22% more favorably; 34% say the ads have had no impact on how they view him. For Riley, 28% say ads have made them feel less favorably toward him, 32% more favorably; a similar number, 36%, say they have had no impact.

When adults in the district are asked which of two statements comes closest to their view on abortion, a majority, 58%, say they more agree that "There should be a federal law restoring a nationwide right to abortion in all states, like it was under Roe v. Wade" – 31% say "It should be left to each state to decide whether abortion is legal or not." 81% of very conservative adults and 53% of somewhat conservative adults say it should be left to each state, while 86% of liberal adults say there should be a nationwide law. The 27-point margin for those preferring a federal law restoring a national right to abortion and the fact 82% of Democrats, 58% of Independents, and 35% of Republicans in the district agree suggests Donald Trump's frequent claims that "Every Democrat, every Republican, everybody wanted Roe v. Wade terminated and brought back to the states" is untrue.

About the Research / Filtering: SurveyUSA interviewed 725 adults from New York's 19th Congressional District 10/11/24 through 10/16/24. Of the adults, 636 were identified as being registered to vote; of the registered voters, 561 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in the November general election. This research was conducted using blended sample, mixed mode. 62% of respondents were shown the survey questions on the display of their smartphone, laptop or tablet, using nonprobability sample of online adult panelists chosen randomly by Cint/Lucid Holdings LLC of New Orleans. The other 38% of respondents were interviewed on their landline telephones in the recorded voice of a professional announcer, using probability-based telephone sample of registered voters purchased from Aristotle in Washington DC: The combined pool of survey respondents was weighted to US Census 2022 ACS targets for gender, age, education, and home ownership, and to recalled 2020 Presidential vote.
