Results of SurveyUSA Election Poll #27332

Incumbent Democrat Mike Levin 12 Points Atop Republican Matt Gunderson in CA-49 Re-Election Bid; Harris Leads Trump by 13 in District:

SurveyUSA's latest exclusive polling for KGTV-TV 10 News and the San Diego Union-Tribune shows Democrats Kamala Harris and Mike Levin easily winning their respective upcoming elections, with Harris running more than twice as strongly as Joe Biden had been when SurveyUSA last polled the district in early June, two weeks before the Trump-Biden debate.

Harris defeats Trump by a 13-point margin in an election held in the 49th District today, 54% to 41%, with 2% saying they will vote for some other candidate and another 2% of likely voters reporting that they are undecided. Four months ago, Biden led Trump by just 5 points, less than half the 11-point margin by which he defeated the Republican in 2020. Trump leads by a 74-point margin among the 1 in 5 voters who say immigration is the most important issue facing the district. The largest group of likely voters, 41%, say the cost of living is the most important issue, and those voters prefer Harris by a 19-point margin, 57% to 38%. Harris also leads by 49 points among the 1-in-10 voters who say homelessness is the top issue, by 19 points among the 6% who say crime is most important, and by a 100-point margin, 100% to 0%, among the 10% who say climate change is most important.

Mike Levin wins his 4th term in Congress by a similar margin as Harris today, 53% to 41%, up slightly from 10 points in June. 1% of likely voters say they'll skip voting in this contest; 5% are undecided, half as many as in the June poll. Both candidates' voters are fairly sure of their choice: 85% of Levin voters and 84% of Gunderson voters say their minds are made up. Gunderson leads by 79 points among Republicans, by 69 points among very conservative voters, and by 60 points among somewhat conservative voters. He leads by 87 points among those voting for Trump this year, and by 86 points among those who say they voted for Trump in 2020. Additionally Gunderson, like Trump, leads by 74 points among voters most-focused on immigration. Levin leads elsewhere, including by 92 points among both liberals and Democrats, by 89 points among both Biden 2020 and Harris 2024 voters, and on the same issues and by similar margins as does Harris, although Levin's lead among crime-focused voters is smaller, 11 points versus the former California Attorney General's 19 point margin.

Levin's favorability rating is much stronger than Gunderson's: 44% say they have a favorable opinion of Levin, 22% a negative opinion; subtracting unfavorable from favorable produces a candidate's Net Favorability Rating, +22 for Levin. Another 22% say their opinion of Levin is neutral, while 12% say they have no opinion of him. Gunderson, in comparison, is at +1, with 29% having favorable and 28% unfavorable opinions. 26% are neutral on the Republican; 17% have no opinion.

Just over half of voters, 53%, say they have seen ads in this contest. Among those who have seen the ads, Levin appears to be the beneficiary: 30% say campaign ads have made them feel more favorable to the Democratic incumbent, 19% less favorable – an 11-point improvement. The plurality, 49%, say the ads have had no impact. 25% have said the ads they've seen have made them feel more favorably towards Gunderson, 33% less favorable – an 8-point negative impact. The largest number of voters, 38% in Gunderson's case, still say the ads have had no impact on their opinion of him.

Abortion rights is an important issue to the majority of voters in the district: 54% say a candidate's position on abortion rights is very important in your vote for US House; another 23% say they are somewhat important. 11% say abortion rights aren't very important; 9% say they're not important to them at all. 77% of Levin voters say abortion rights will be a very important issue to them this year, compared to 25% of Gunderson voters; 41% of Gunderson voters say they're not very (22%) or not at all (19%) important, compared to 5% of Levin's (3% not very, 2% not at all).
