Kamala Harris, Adam Schiff, and Sara Jacobs Each Set to Easily Win 51st District Races Next Week; Economy, Abortion Seen as Top Issues:

No surprises appear likely when votes begin to be counted next week in California's 51st Congressional District, according to SurveyUSA's latest exclusive polling for KGTV 10 News and the San Diego Union-Tribune.

At the top of the ticket, Vice President Kamala Harris takes 62% of the vote, former President Donald Trump 29%, with 4% of likely voters saying they will cast a ballot for some other candidate, 2% telling SurveyUSA they will not cast a ballot in the contest, and 3% undecided. When SurveyUSA last polled the district in June, Joe Biden led Donald Trump by 21 points, 54% to 33%, a dozen points less than Harris' 33-point lead.

In the full-term election for US Senate, Democrat Adam Schiff also has an easy time of it, defeating former pro baseball player Steve Garvey by a 21-point margin, 54% to 33%, with 2% not casting a ballot and 11% undecided. Garvey, who played for both the Dodgers and Padres, is running 4 points ahead of Donald Trump; Schiff, who represents the 30th Congressional District, is running 8 points behind Kamala Harris.

Incumbent US Representative Sara Jacobs defeats El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells by 36 points, 61% to 25%, with 3% not casting a ballot and 10% undecided. Jacobs, first elected in 2020, has widened her lead since our polling this summer, when she led Wells by 22 points, 54% to 32%. 83% of Jacobs' voters say they will definitely vote for her; 13% say they might change their mind. 78% of Wells' voters say they will definitely vote for him; 14% may change their minds.

75% of likely voters say it is very important to them to vote in the US House election; 18% say it is somewhat important; 4% say it isn't very important, and just 2% say it isn't important at all.

A large plurality of voters, 41%, say the economy and cost of living is the most important issue to them when voting for Congress. Those voters prefer Sara Jacobs by an 18-point margin, 51% to 33%. Abortion, at 21%, is the next-most important issue; voters most-focused on abortion back Jacobs by 79 points, 85% to 6%. Those who say immigration is most important in their vote, 15% of likely voters, prefer Wells by a 31-point margin, 57% to 26%.

A candidate's political party is seen as a major factor when deciding who to support for Congress by 54% of voters; 23% say this is a moderate factor; 14% a minor factor. 6% say it isn't a factor at all.

25% day federal laws and policies on climate have the greatest impact on their life and their family; 22% say policies and laws on immigration; 20% say on guns; 12% say abortion; 6% the Middle East; 4% China.

About the Research / Filtering: SurveyUSA interviewed 650 adults from California's 51st Congressional District 10/23/24 through 10/27/24. Of the adults, 565 were identified as being registered to vote; of the registered voters, 521 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in the election or to have already cast their ballots. This research was conducted using blended sample, mixed mode. Respondents reachable on a home telephone (44% of likely voters) were interviewed on their home telephone in the recorded voice of a professional announcer, using telephone sample of registered voters purchased from Aristotle in Washington DC. Respondents unreachable on a landline telephone (56% of likely voters) were shown the survey questions on the display of their smartphone, laptop or tablet, using online adult panelists chosen randomly by Lucid Holdings LLC of New Orleans. The combined pool of survey respondents was weighted to targets for gender, age, race, home ownership, and recalled 2020 Presidential vote.
