4 Days Till Voting Begins in Los Angeles Mayor Primary, Garcetti Narrowly Atop Greuel, As Spotlight Shines on Greuel's Budget-Cut Math:

In a primary election today, 01/31/13, for the open seat of Mayor of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti and Wendy Greuel emerge as clear front-runners, likely to advance to a 2-person runoff, according to a SurveyUSA tracking poll conducted for KABC-TV in Los Angeles. But unfolding news events add drama to the contest and may influence voters in the 5 weeks until votes are counted.

4 candidates today are in double digits. City councilman Garcetti gets 24% among likely primary voters, followed by city controller Wendy Greuel at 20%. Councilwoman Jan Perry is at 15% and broadcaster Kevin James is at 12%. 4 others are farther back. Early voting begins in 4 days, on Monday, 02/04/13. Should any one candidate get 50% + 1 vote in the 03/05/13 primary, he or she will be elected Mayor. With an 8-person field, that is unlikely. More likely: the top 2 finishers in the primary will advance to a 05/21/13 general election.

The contest today is tighter than when SurveyUSA measured it 2 weeks ago, on 01/16/13. Then, Garcetti led Greuel by 8, now Garcetti leads Greuel by 4.

* Garcetti's support is disproportionately male, conservative, Latino and Asian.
* Greuel's support is white, older, educated and affluent.
* Perry's support is black and lower-income.
* James's support is young and Republican.
* 1 in 7 voters today are undecided.

In the election for City Attorney of Los Angeles, incumbent Carmen Trutanich today defeats Mike Feuer 29% to 19%, SurveyUSA finds. Greg Smith is at 13%. Noel Weiss is at 8%.

Cell-phone and home-phone respondents included in this research: SurveyUSA interviewed 850 city of Los Angeles adults 01/28/13 through 01/30/13. All interviews were completed before a Los Angeles Times news story 01/31/13 raised questions about Greuel's cost-savings claims, and before subsequent press conferences in reaction to that LA Times news story. Of the adults interviewed by SurveyUSA, 724 were registered to vote. Of the registered, 429 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in the 03/05/13 primary. This research was conducted using blended sample, mixed-mode. Respondents reachable on a home telephone (78% of likely voters) were interviewed on their home telephone in the recorded voice of a professional announcer. Respondents not reachable on a home telephone (22% of likely voters) were shown a questionnaire on their smartphone, tablet or other electronic device.
