In Florida, 3 Top-of-Ticket Contests All Fiercely Contested, 8 Weeks Till Votes Are Counted:
The fight to be the next U.S. Senator from Florida, the next Governor from Florida, and the next Attorney General from Florida are all too-close-to-call, 8 weeks to Election Day, according to SurveyUSA research conducted exclusively for Bay News 9 Tampa and News 13 Orlando. Republican Rick Scott has a nominal 2-point advantage over Democratic incumbent Bill Nelson in the much watched U.S. Senate fight with national significance. Scott leads among suburban men and suburban women. When combined with the fact that rural voters split and urban voters break only narrowly for Nelson, this gives Scott enough to potentially flip the seat. Scott leads by 10 points among men, trails by 6 points among women, a 16-point Gender Gap. Cubans back Scott, the sitting Governor, 2:1. Non-Cuban Hispanics back Nelson 2:1. Whites vote Republican 5:4. African Americans vote Democrat 9:1. Independents favor Nelson by 5 points, moderates favor Nelson by 19 points. Of those who approve of the job that Scott is doing as Governor, 85% support his bid for Senator. The 2 candidates run effectively even among voters of all education levels. Lower-income voters break for Nelson; affluent voters break for Scott. Nelson runs up 59% of the vote in the population centers of Dade County (Miami) and Broward County (Fort Lauderdale). But Scott has a majority in Central Florida (which includes Orlando), in Northeast Florida (which includes Jacksonville) and Southwest Florida (which includes Tampa and Fort Myers). Northwest Florida is tied. In the fight for the open Governor seat, surprise Democratic primary winner Andrew Gillum has a nominal 4-point advantage over Republican Ron DeSantis at this hour, very much subject to change over the next 8 weeks as voters get to know the 2 candidates. Gillum leads by double digits among voters younger than age 50, leads by 3 points among voters age 50 to 64, and trails only among seniors, where DeSantis leads by 6. Gillum, who is black, gets 91% of the black vote, 77% of the Hispanic vote, 40% of the white vote, and 31% of the Cuban vote. Republicans are locked-in on DeSantis, Democrats are locked-in on Gillum, leaving independents to ultimately decide the contest. At this hour, Gillum leads 4:3 among independent voters and 2:1 among moderates. Gillum leads by 17 points among voters with a high school education, leads by 15 points among less-affluent voters. The Gender Gap is 26 points, DeSantis up by 10 among men, Gillum up by 16 among women. In Southeast Florida, Gillum more than doubles DeSantis, but in all 4 other regions of the state, DeSantis leads, including in Gillum's backyard, Tallahassee. DeSantis narrowly carries suburban men; Gillum narrowly carries suburban women. Rural voters split. Gillum leads in urban parts of the state by 18 points. In the contest for Attorney General of Florida, Republican Ashley Moody and Democrat Sean Shaw are effectively even in this snapshot, 41% to 40%. Moody leads by 17 points among men, by 14 points among whites and by 32 points among Cubans. Shaw remains competitive because he doubles Moody in Southeast Florida, leads by 8 among suburban women, leads by 15 points among moderates, and leads by 46 points among non-Cuban Hispanics. As voters get to know the 2 candidates, and the number of undecided voters drops from 18% today to a smaller number when early voting begins, the contrasts between the candidates will become more pronounced. Floridians say the economy is the most important issue in 2018. Crippling to Democrats, of voters focused on the economy (29% of likely voters name the economy as most important, ahead of 18% who name immigration and 14% who name national security), Republican Scott leads by 25 points, Republican DeSantis leads by 17 points, and Republican Moody leads by 22 points. President Donald Trump's Net Job Approval in Florida is Minus 6: 43% of registered voters approve of the job Trump is doing; 49% disapprove. Scott's Net Job Approval is Plus 8: 48% of voters approve of the job Scott is doing as Governor, 40% disapprove. Democratic U.S. Senator Bill Nelson's Net Job Approval is Plus 5: 40% approve of the job Nelson is doing; 35% disapprove. Republican U.S. Senator Marco Rubio's Net job Approval is Plus 3: 41% approve of the job Rubio is doing, 38% disapprove. Rubio is not on the ballot in 2018. About: SurveyUSA interviewed 1,050 adults statewide 09/07/18 through 09/09/18. Of the adults, 890 were registered to vote.
