Georgia Governor's Fight Could Go Either Way: Republican Kemp Has Nominal 2-Point Advantage, 4 Weeks Till Votes Are Counted,
But African American Turnout Could Easily Propel Democrat Abrams To The Statehouse; Every Vote Critical During Home Stretch:

In the fierce fight for the open Governor's seat in the state of Georgia, with early voting already underway, Republican Brian Kemp and Democrat Stacey Abrams run effectively even, 47% for Kemp, 45% for Abrams, well within error parameters for the survey, which was commissioned by WXIA-TV in Atlanta. The contest is best characterized as a jump ball.

Abrams, who is African American, leads 17:1 among black voters, who represent 30% of the likely electorate according to SurveyUSA's modeling. White voters, who are 64% of SurveyUSA's electorate, back Kemp by nearly 3:1.

Kemp holds 94% of the Republican base (just 5% cross-over and vote Democratic); Abrams holds 97% of the Democratic base (just 1% cross-over and vote Republican). But, of concern to Abrams and of great help to Kemp, independent voters break 46% to 29% for the Republican. Conservatives break 7:1 for Kemp; liberals break 18:1 for Abrams; and the all-important moderates break 5:3 for Abrams, possibly offsetting some of the votes that Abrams loses among independents.

Kemp leads among those who do not have a 4-year college degree; Abrams leads by 12 points among the college educated. Rural voters back Kemp by 40 points. Urban voters back Abrams by 38 points. Kemp leads narrowly among suburban men; Abrams leads by 11 points among suburban women. Younger voters --- often the least reliable during off-year elections --- favor Abrams by 23 points. Seniors --- often the most reliable voters --- favor Kemp by 14 points.

When voters statewide are asked whether they will vote for the Republican candidate for the US House of Representatives or the Democratic candidate, 46% pick the Democrat, 44% pick the Republican.

By 5:1, voters are in favor of allowing marijuana to be grown for medicinal purposes. By 5:3, voters say the recreational use of marijuana should be legalized in Georgia.

Voters are divided over whether to arm school teachers and other school employees. 46% are in favor; 41% are opposed. By nearly 2:1, voters say the city of Atlanta should continue to be responsible for the operation of Hartsfield Airport, not the state of GA.

40% statewide support Brett Kavanaugh becoming a justice on the Supreme Court of the United States. 40% oppose.

About: SurveyUSA interviewed 1,250 adults from the state of Georgia 10/03/18 through 10/08/18. Of the adults, 1027 are registered to vote. Of the registered voters, SurveyUSA identified 655 individuals who are likely to return a ballot on or before the 11/06/18 deadline. This research was conducted online.
