Signatures Counted, Recall Election Will Take Place, But Californians Lukewarm To Idea, With Just 36% Saying Gov. Newsom Should be Recalled;
Republican John Cox, Backed By 9% in Replacement Vote, Leads Caitlyn Jenner 2:1, But Trails "Undecided" 3:1, Trails "None" By 4:1 Margin:

47% of California registered voters say Governor Gavin Newsom should remain in office as Governor, according to SurveyUSA's latest statewide polling. 36% say Newsom should be recalled. Support for recalling Newsom tops 50% only among Republicans, conservatives, those who voted for Donald Trump in the 2020 Presidential election, and among those who have not yet been vaccinated.

Among those who have not yet been vaccinated, 51% say Newsom should be recalled, compared to 28% of those who have received one or more COVID-19 immunization shots.
Among those not yet vaccinated who do not plan to get vaccinated, 67% say Newsom should be recalled.

The recall is opposed 3:1 in the Bay Area and by 5:3 in the Central Valley. A small plurality in the Inland Empire support Newsom's recall, 39% to 35%; greater LA voters are divided.

The second question on the recall ballot will ask who should replace Newsom and serve out the rest of his term if he is recalled. When asked who they would support -- regardless of whether or not they believe Newsom should be recalled -- the plurality, 38%, say they would not support any of the candidates named in the poll. Among those who oppose Newsom's recall, 65% say they would not support any of the candidates.

Republican John Cox, who lost to Newsom in 2018's gubernatorial election, is supported by 9% of registered voters today; Caitlyn Jenner and Richard Grenell each by 5%; 5 other named Republicans each get the support of 3% of California's registered voters. Among just those voters who say they support the Newsom recall, Cox is supported by 19%, Grenell by 9%, Jenner 8%; Major Williams and Kevin Faulconer each by 7% ... but as was the case in 2003, the last (and only previous) time California recalled a Governor, everyone who votes in the recall election is able to vote for the potential replacement, regardless of whether they vote to recall or not. At this point in 2021, no prominent Democrat has entered the race: should one do so, and should there be any significant desire among Democrats to "change horses" to that Democratic alternative, support for the recall could well move upwards from the 36% SurveyUSA finds it at today.

62% of California adults today report they have been vaccinated against the Coronavirus; 37% have not. 9 weeks ago, when SurveyUSA last asked this question, just 21% had been vaccinated.

Of those not yet vaccinated, 45% say they plan to be; 43% say they do not.

41% of California adults say getting vaccinated against the Coronavirus should be mandatory, including 57% of those who have already received at least one shot. 52% of adults say vaccination should be optional, including 79% of those not yet vaccinated.

About The Poll: SurveyUSA interviewed 750 California adults 04/30/21 through 05/02/21, using sample provided by Lucid Holdings LLC of New Orleans. Of the adults, 642 were identified as being registered voters and were asked the subset of questions concerning the potential recall election. 2A campaign to recall California Governor Gavin Newsom has collected enough valid signatures to cause a recall election to be held before the end of this year. There will be two questions on the ballot. The first will ask if Newsom should or should not be recalled. Do you think Gavin Newsom should be recalled, which would remove him from office? Or should Newsom remain in office as Governor?

3The second question would ask who should replace Newsom and serve out the rest of his term if he is recalled. So far, no Democrats have announced an intention to run. Regardless of whether you think Newsom should remain in office or be recalled from office, you will have the opportunity to also vote on who should replace Newsom if he is recalled.
If these were the candidates on that ballot to replace Newsom, who would you be most likely to support? Or, would you not support any of these candidates? (candidate names rotated)
