Democrat Weed Makes Inroads, But Republican Goode Poised for Re-Election In VA5: In an election today, 10/11/06, in Virginia's 5th Congressional District, incumbent Republican Virgil Goode defeats Democratic challenger Al Weed, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for WDBJ-TV Roanoke. Goode gets 56% of the vote today, down 3 points from a SurveyUSA WDBJ-TV poll conducted in July. Weed gets 40%, up 5 points. Goode had led by 24, now leads by 16. Weed has gained the most ground among voters age 50-64, who support Goode by only 6 points, down from 32 in July. 92% of Republicans vote Republican. 83% of Democrats vote Democrat. Independents back Goode 4:3. Goode wins 2:1 among white voters. Weed wins 4:1 among African-American voters. Those who have attended graduate school support Weed 4:3. All other levels of education support Goode. President George W. Bush's approval rating among likely voters in Virginia's 5th Congressional District is 48%. 90% of those who approve of Bush support Goode; of those who disapprove of Bush, only 22% support Goode. The election is on 11/7/06. |
