Results of SurveyUSA Election Poll #14285

Fierce Fight for Republican Heather Wilson's Open Seat in New Mexico's 1st District: In an election for the open seat in New Mexico's 1st Congressional District, Democrat Martin Heinrich edges Republican Darren White, 51% to 46%, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for Roll Call, the newspaper of Capitol Hill. The Democrat, a member of the Albuquerque city council, leads decisively among Hispanic voters. The Republican, sheriff of Bernalillo County, leads slightly among white voters. The Democrat leads among voters under age 50. Voters age 50+ split. Independents break 5:3 Democrat. Moderates break 2:1 Democrat. 43% in the district have a favorable opinion of White. 34% have a favorable opinion of Heinrich. Republican White's Net Favorable Rating is Plus 14, significantly better than both the outgoing Republican Congresswoman Wilson, whose Net Favorable Fating is Minus 5, and John McCain, whose Net Favorable Rating is Minus 4. Barack Obama has a Net Favorable Rating of Plus 20. Obama wins the District 55% to 41% in an election today. Voters say the economy is the #1 issue for Congress to focus on. Those voters focused on the economy back the Democrat Heinrich by 26 points.

Filtering / Context: New Mexico's 1st Congressional District includes Albuquerque and the region South and East of it. Republican Heather Wilson has held the seat for 10 years. Wilson, who ran unsuccessfully to be the Republican nominee to replace Republican Pete Domenici in the U.S. Senate, is not seeking another term in the House. 725 registered voters were interviewed by SurveyUSA 08/26/08 through 08/28/08, using Registration Based Sample from Aristotle of Washington DC. Of the registered voters, 631 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in November.
