In Minnesota, DFL Party Democrats Poised to Sweep Governor and Two U.S. Senate Contests But Attorney General Battle, Involving Ellison And Abuse Allegations, Could Go Either Way: Widespread Opposition to Trump's Tariffs; Widespread Support to Legalize Marijuana: 5 days till votes are counted in Minnesota, with many ballots already in the bank, DFL candidates Tim Walz for Governor, Tina Smith for U.S. Senate, and Amy Klobuchar for U.S. Senate are all comfortably ahead of their Republican rivals and likely to triumph on election night, next Tuesday 11/06/18, according to SurveyUSA research conducted exclusively for KSTP-TV in the Twin Cities and Hubbard Broadcasting. Walz today leads Republican Jeff Johnson by 8 points, effectively unchanged from a SurveyUSA poll 6 weeks ago when Walz led Johnson by 7. Among voters who tell SurveyUSA they have already returned a ballot, Walz leads by nearly 2:1. Smith today leads Republican Karin Housley by 8 points, effectively unchanged from a SurveyUSA poll 6 weeks ago when SurveyUSA had Smith ahead by 9 points. This contest is to fill the seat left vacant when DFL Senator Al Franken resigned. Among voters who tell SurveyUSA they have already returned a ballot, Smith leads by more than 2:1. Klobuchar today leads Republican Jim Newberger by 23 points, a materially stronger showing for Klobuchar than the 15-point advantage SurveyUSA found Klobuchar to have 6 weeks ago. Among voters who tell SurveyUSA they have already returned a ballot, Klobuchar leads by more than 2:1. In the battle to be the next Attorney General of Minnesota, DFL candidate Keith Ellison today has a potentially meaningful 4-point advantage over Republican Doug Wardlow, 44% to 40%. 6 weeks ago, Ellison and Wardlow were tied, 41% each. Today's 4-percentage-point edge for Ellison is on the cusp of this survey's possible sources of error. The contest has enough volatility tied to it that the outcome could go either way. 44% of Republicans say domestic abuse allegations against Ellison are a factor in how they vote; 41% of Republicans say the allegations are not a factor. 26% of Democrats say the abuse allegations are a factor in how they vote; 48% of Democrats say they are not a factor. Worth noting: of respondents who tell SurveyUSA they have already returned a ballot, Ellison leads by 27 points, 57% to 30%. For Wardlow to dig himself out of this hole, he would need to run up the score among those voters who cast their ballot on Election Day. Overwhelmingly, Minnesotans say the most important issue in determining how they vote in 2018 is health care. Among voters focused on health care, Democrat Walz leads by 45 points, Democrat Smith leads by 37 points, Democrat Klobuchar leads by 61 points and Democrat Ellison leads by 39 points. By contrast: among voters who say taxes are the most important issue in 2018, Republican Johnson leads by 62 points, Republican Housley leads by 57 points, Republican Newberger leads by 31 points and Republican Wardlow leads by 48 points. Minnesotans narrowly oppose President Donald Trump's policies on immigration, more broadly oppose Trump's approach to foreign relations, and by nearly 2:1 oppose his trade tariffs. A plurality of voters statewide think that the best solution to health care is to keep and improve the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare). A majority statewide, including two-thirds of those under the age of 50, favor legalizing the recreational use of marijuana in Minnesota. 59% statewide are opposed to Minnesota becoming a sanctuary state. About: SurveyUSA interviewed 1,000 state of Minnesota adults 10/29/18 through 10/31/18. Of the adults, 833 are registered to vote. Of the registered voters, SurveyUSA identified 600 who have either already returned a ballot or who are certain to do so before the 11/06/18 deadline. Governor Mark Dayton is not seeking re-election. This research was conducted online. |
