1Two new federal laws being considered in Congress would change immigration rules for some people who are living illegally in the United States today.

First, the American Dream and Promise Act, previously known as the DREAM Act, would allow people who were brought to the United States illegally when they were children to apply for immigration without the need to get a visa, allowing them to legally live in the United States. Applicants must already be in the United States to apply.

3Another proposed law, the American Families United Act, would allow the U.S. citizen to request a case-by-case waiver for the non-citizen spouse and children for many of the reasons they ordinarily may be denied permission to live here. Judges and others authorized to hear immigration cases would not have the discretion to reunite families if the non-citizen is a national security threat or has a history of serious criminal activity.

2Second, the Farm Workforce Modernization Act would allow farm workers who are living and working illegally in the United States, as well as their spouses and children, whether the spouses and children are inside or outside the United States, to apply for immigration without a visa, allowing them to legally live in the United States.
