MN 2022 Gov Elex Look-Ahead: DFL Incumbent Walz Leads Potential GOP Opponents By Double Digits, Has Plus 8 Net Favorability Rating:

11 months until votes are counted in Minnesota's next election for Governor, DFL incumbent Tim Walz holds a double-digit lead over each of 6 potential Republican challengers, according to SurveyUSA's latest exclusive polling for KSTP-TV Minneapolis, KAAL-TV in Rochester-Mason City-Austin, and WDIO-TV in Duluth.

Walz also has the best name recognition and highest Net Favorability rating of the field. Net Favorability is calculated by subtracting unfavorable ratings from favorable ratings. Candidate names were shown to respondents in random order, ranked here from highest to lowest net favorability:
  • Tim Walz...............Plus 8. 47% view Walz favorably, 39% unfavorably; 11% view him neutrally. Only 3% have no opinion of Walz.
  • Scott Jensen...........Plus 4. 16% view Jensen favorably, 12% unfavorably; 25% have a neutral opinion; 48% have no opinion of him.
  • Mike Murphy.........Plus 2. 10% have a favorable view of Murphy, 8% an unfavorable view; 27% are neutral. 55% have no opinion.
  • Neil Shah...............Minus 1. 9% view Shah favorably, 10% unfavorably; 25% are neutral. 56% have no opinion.
  • Michelle Benson....Minus 2. 12% have a favorable opinion of Benson, 14% an unfavorable opinion; 31% are neutral. 43% have no opinion.
  • Mike Marti.............Minus 3. 8% favorable, 11% unfavorable; 27% neutral. 55% have no opinion.
  • Paul Gazelka..........Minus 11. 11% have a favorable opinion of Gazelka, 22% an unfavorable opinion; 28% are neutral. 38% have no opinion.
In head to head matchups against each Republican, Walz leads by between 11 and 17 percentage points.
  • Walz defeats State Senator Paul Gazelka by 13 points today, 47% to 34%. Gazelka, the best-known candidate running to oppose Walz, leads by 24 points in Western Minnesota and by 10 points in the Northeastern part of the state. Walz leads by 29 points in Southern MN and by 20 in the Twin Cities area.
  • Against State Senator Michelle Benson, Walz wins by 12 points, 47% to 35%. Benson leads by 16 in Western Minnesota, ties Walz in the Northeast; Walz leads by 19 in the rest of the state.
  • Former state Senator Scott Jensen also loses to Walz by a 12-point margin, 48% to 36%. While conservative voters unsurprisingly back each Republican candidate by a wide margin, Jensen is the candidate who runs most strongly with conservatives, taking 80% of conservatives' votes.
  • Walz defeats Lexington Mayor Mike Murphy by 11 points, 47% to 36%. Murphy takes 76% of conservative votes – second only to Jensen.
  • Entrepreneur Mike Marti loses to Walz by 13 points, 47% to 34%. Marti has a 16-point advantage in Western Minnesota, but trails elsewhere.
  • Physician Neil Shah falls to Walz by 17 points, 48% to 31%. Shah, the least-known of the Republican candidates, nevertheless leads by 10 points in Western Minnesota.
 
About the Research / Filtering: SurveyUSA interviewed a representative cross-section of 675 Minnesota adults online 12/02/21 through 12/06/21, using sample provided by Lucid Holdings LLC of New Orleans. Of the adults, 591 were registered to vote. Of the registered voters, 506 were identified by SurveyUSA as being likely to vote in the November 2022 general election and were asked the questions which follow. The pool of adult survey respondents was weighted to US Census targets for gender, age, race, education, and home ownership.
