If Coronavirus Vaccine is Developed, One-Third in GA Are *Not* Likely to Take It; Until Then, Tooth-And-Nail Disagreement On Federal, State, and Local Response to COVID Pandemic That Has Killed 4,100 Here, Put Peach State Into Global Spotlight: Georgians remain bulldogs on the Coronavirus, SurveyUSA finds in exclusive research conducted for WXIA-TV in Atlanta. Though there is consensus that the United states has done a poor job at controlling COVID spread, Peach State residents are split about what to do next. For starters: * 45% approve how President Donald Trump has responded to the virus, 47% disapprove. 72% of blacks and Hispanics disapprove versus 31% of whites. * 43% approve how Republican Governor Brian Kemp has responded to the virus. 46% disapprove. * Conservatives are 8 times more likely than liberals to strongly approve of Kemp's virus response. * 34% statewide say they trust Kemp more to make decisions about the virus. * 37% say they trust their local mayor more. * Republicans by 4:1 trust the Governor. Democrats by 4:1 trust mayors. * Georgians who know someone with COVID trust their local mayor 4:3. Georgians who do not know someone with COVID trust the Governor 4:3. About 1 in 7 Georgians say public schools should not open at all at the start of this school year. Another 1 in 7 say schools should open for in-class instruction, just as they always do. In between those 2 extremes is the meat of the GA bell-curve: 36% say public schools should re-open for remote learning only (disproportionately black and Hispanic women); 28% (disproportionately young men) say public schools should adopt a hybrid model, where on any given day some students are in class and others are not. Where in Georgia is there consensus? * By 4:1, Georgians say that if a local area wants more strict virus rules, they should be allowed to have them. * By 2:1, Georgians say a face mask should be mandatory in an indoor public setting. Urban and suburban residents are on board; rural residents are not. * By 5:3, Georgians trust Dr Anthony Fauci more than they trust President Donald Trump. * Just 9% say the USA is doing an excellent job at controlling the virus. * 4 times as many, 37%, say the USA is doing a poor job. * 26% live in a household where someone has lost a job because of the virus. * 35% live in a household where someone has had their hours reduced because of the virus. About: SurveyUSA interviewed 800 state of Georgia adults 08/06/2020 through 08/08/2020. This research was conducted online among a random and representative cross section of Georgia adults. Results were nominally weighted to US Census Bureau targets for gender, age, race, education and home-ownership to ensure that the respondent pool reflects the state.
