Results of SurveyUSA Election Poll #26543

As CA Early Voting Begins, Sports Betting Propositions Could Go Either Way, With Proposition 26 Narrowly Favored to Pass, Proposition 27 Trailing:

SurveyUSA's latest exclusive polling for KGTV 10News and the San Diego Union Tribune shows a relative lack of voter familiarity with two ballot measures related to gaming may be contributing to high numbers of undecided voters, leaving any outcome possible.

On Proposition 26, which would allow in-person roulette, dice games, and sports betting on tribal lands, 43% today say they are certain to vote yes, 32% certain to vote no; 25% say they are undecided. Men back Prop. 26 by a 23-point margin; women are evenly split. Voters under age 50 strongly support the measure; voters 50 to 64 narrowly favor, voters 65+ strongly oppose. Democrats favor by a 20-point margin, independents by 10; Republicans are divided. The measure easily passes in the Inland Empire and in Greater Los Angeles; Central Valley, Bay Area, and San Diego voters very narrowly support.

Proposition 27, which would allow online and mobile sports betting outside of tribal lands, today fails, with 37% voting yes, 43% no, and 20% of likely voters undecided. Men vote yes by a 10-point margin; women vote no by a 22-point margin, a 32-point gender gap. 18 to 34 year-olds vote yes by 27 points, voters 35 to 49 by 23 points; 50 to 64 year-olds oppose by a 14-point margin; voters 65+ oppose by an overwhelming 57-point margin, 10% to 67%. Democrats very narrowly back Prop. 27; Republicans oppose by a 13-point margin, independents by 18 points. Voters in Greater Los Angeles narrowly support the measure; those in the Inland Empire very narrowly oppose; San Diego voters oppose by 12 points, Bay Area voters oppose by 17, and Central Valley voters oppose by 18 points.

Both measures perform significantly better among those who regularly bet on sports and regularly visit tribal casinos, among those who say providing housing for homeless people will be the most important issue in determining how they will vote on these measures, and among those who are more familiar with the propositions and those who better understand the difference between them.

37% of likely voters say that overall, expanding access to gambling will be good for California, 41% say it will be bad; 22% are not sure.

SurveyUSA also finds Gavin Newsom and Alex Padilla both well ahead in their re-election bids, with both Democrats defeating their Republican opponents, gubernatorial candidate Brian Dahle and US Senate candidate Mark Meuser, by 22-point margins.

6California voters will also vote on a number of ballot measures this year; we'd like to ask you about two of them.

First, Proposition 26, which would allow in-person roulette, dice games, and sports betting on tribal lands. On Proposition 26, are you certain to vote yes? Certain to vote no? Or no certain?
