Results of Research of 5,000 US Adults Across Eight Separate States Shows Mixed Reactions to Idea of Splitting US Into Multiple Countries:

In eight separate pieces of research, SurveyUSA interviewed 625 adults in each of 8 US states on the topic of splitting the United States into two or more countries based on political divisions.

Research was conducted in six southern states (Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, South Carolina, and Florida), in New Hampshire, and in Hawaii. Respondents in the southern states saw state-customized versions of largely the same questionnaire, while Hawaii respondents were shown a number of Hawaii-specific questions and some of the questions from the southern surveys, and New Hampshire respondents received primarily New Hampshire-specific questions combined with a small number of the questions also asked in the South.

Click the links above to view fully crosstabbed results for each state; highlighted top-line results compared from state to state follow:

Majorities in each southern state, in Hawaii, and in New Hampshire say Congress should just let the state go if any of California, Texas, or Hawaii voted to declare its intention to negotiate peacefully with Congress to leave the union. There is relatively little variance across the eight states polled and across the three states being asked about; on average, 57% say the state should be allowed to leave; 37% say economic sanctions should be used; 6% would back a military attack to keep the state in the union.

Respondents in Texas (by 20 points), Louisiana (13 points), Mississippi (11 points), and Hawaii (9 points) would each support the idea of their state holding a vote to find out whether voters want to peacefully separate from the US. Those in Florida (by 11 points), South Carolina (6 points), New Hampshire (5 points), and Alabama (a nominal 2 points) are opposed.

While holding a vote sees some clear support in some states, the idea of actually setting a date to be independent from the US, recruiting other states to join a federation, and peacefully negotiating a withdrawal from the US, even if it is uncertain whether other states would join, is supported only in Texas, and there by a small 7 point margin. The margin of opposition in the south ranges from a low of 4 points in Louisiana to 23 points in Florida, and is 31 points in New Hampshire.

Pluralities in most of the eight states polled (and a majority in New Hampshire) would not donate any volunteer time to political movements working to lead their state out of the union; majorities in most states (and a plurality in Texas) would not donate any money to these efforts.

Pluralities in Mississippi (a 27-point margin), Alabama (22 points), Louisiana (18 points), and Texas (7 points) say they are opposed to the idea of groups of counties or parishes declaring independence from the US on their own.

Along with the preceding questions, SurveyUSA also asked New Hampshire adults a series of questions about the current state of politics in the United States. First, respondents were asked how much they agreed or disagreed with these six statements, ranked here from most combined agreement to least:
  • 91%: People in the United States are growing more divided over important issues, such as LGBT rights, guns, abortion, election integrity, race relations, involvement in foreign wars, climate change, immigration, etc.
  • 89%: If the citizens of the United States continue to get more divided on major issues, I fear that political violence will increase.
  • 79%: The federal government's financial decisions and economic regulations hurt our livelihoods and could lead to inflation and bankruptcy.
  • 65%: Politicians in Washington, DC violate our rights more than they protect our rights.
  • 64%: Laws, regulations, and court rulings coming out of Washington, DC are incompatible with New Hampshire's culture of freedom.
  • 29%: Elected leaders in the Federal Government have my best interests in mind when passing legislation.
New Hampshire adults were next asked whether or not the state should be able to ignore federal laws and regulations in eight different areas. Percentage saying they agreed NH should be able to ignore federal laws, ranked from highest to lowest:
  • 55%: Cannabis. 27% disagree.
  • 50%: Abortion. 33% disagree.
  • 46%: Education. 41% disagree.
  • 45%: Firearms. 42% disagree.
  • 42%: Medicine. 37% disagree.
  • 42%: Public health. 42% disagree.
  • 41%: Businesses. 38% disagree.
  • 40% Welfare. 42% disagree.
A series of additional statements show some additional elements of independence:
  • 63% agree (22% strongly agree, 41% somewhat agree) that they trust their state government more than they trust the federal government. 24% disagree (17% somewhat disagree, 7% strongly disagree.)
  • 43% agree (20% strongly, 23% somewhat) that states should not need permission from the federal government to peacefully separate it. 45% disagree (16% somewhat, 29% strongly).
  • 39% agree (16% strongly, 23% somewhat) that if New Hampshire were not already part of the US, it would be beneficial for the state to join. 58% disagree (21% somewhat, 37% strongly).
  • 38% agree (11% strongly, 27% somewhat) that the arrangement most likely to provide peace and tranquility in the United States is for individual counties to be allowed to be governed by states that are in line with their values. 31% disagree (16% somewhat, 15% strongly).
  • 29% agree (14% strongly, 15% somewhat) that they would prefer New Hampshire govern itself as an independent country. 58% disagree (21% somewhat, 37% strongly).

22What is the strongest penalty that Congress should impose on the state if someday one of the following states were to vote to declare its intention to:
  • Negotiate peacefully with Congress to separate from the US
  • No longer send its elected officials to Congress
  • Sign treaties to allow the United States to maintain important military bases within the state
