Democrat Hagan Breaks from Gate Hot on the Tail of Incumbent Republican Elizabeth Dole in NC Senate Fight: In an election for United States Senator from North Carolina today, 24 weeks to Election Day, incumbent Republican Elizabeth Dole narrowly edges Democrat Kay Hagan, 50% to 46%, according to this SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for WTVD-TV in Raleigh. Among white voters, Dole leads by 24; among blacks, Hagan leads by 66. Blacks make-up 20% of the electorate in SurveyUSA's turnout model today. If blacks vote in larger numbers, the contest is closer. In greater Charlotte, Dole leads. Elsewhere, the contest is effectively tied. Among men, Dole leads by 13; among women, Hagan leads by 3. A 16-point Gender Gap. Among voters age 18 to 49, Dole leads by 13; among voters 50+, Hagan leads by 5. An 18-point Generation Gap. Among voters who earn less than $50,000 a year, Hagan leads. Among voters who earn more than $50,000 a year, Dole leads. One in four Democrats today cross over to vote for Dole, who is running for her second term. Hagan is serving her fifth term in the North Carolina State Senate.
 
Filtering: SurveyUSA interviewed 1,000 North Carolina adults 05/17/08 through 05/19/08. Of them, 866 were registered to vote; of them, 713 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in the 11/04/08 general election.
